In 1938 four men – Austrians and Germans – accomplished the first 1st ascent of north face of the Eiger.
Great things – as we say again and again – should be celebrated by drinking copious amounts of wine and this ascent was a sheer triumph of the spirit of man over the elements – a bit like trying to get senior management to see that the way they want to do things is intrinsically shit.
But these four men managed it and finally scaled the peak and tasted triumph. (If the film the North Face is to be believed they basically did it in thick woolly jumpers and gloves that their nannans had knitted.)
And if they can do that – sober and in wool clothes – just imagine what you can do with wine in your blood and a suit! Dare to dream, dare to dream!
