It’s 1865 in Springfield, Missouri. You’re just wandering home through the dusty streets with your handcart full of wine and suddenly you see two men squaring up in the market square.
Grab a corkscrew – you’re about to witness some history!
Because those two men were Wild Bill Hickok and Davis Tutt. They are about to have what is widely regarded as the first proper western showdown. Hickok won and shot Tutt dead thus guaranteeing both of them a place in history.
So today, as fearless outlaws and wine drinkers we have a duty to commemorate this unique and iconic event by drinking vino. In fact we have a duty to have a wine showdown. Two participants. Two bottles of wine. Two corkscrews.
Stand back to back, take five steps, turn and open that bottle as quick as you can. The winner is the one still standing a few hours later as empty bottles litter the floor like discarded bullets.
Obviously you might have to drink a lot of the stuff. Oh well…..
A quote: “Let us have wine and women, mirth and laughter, Sermons and soda-water the day after.” Byron.
