It’s 13th July 1939 and Frank Sinatra makes his recording debut. He sings – appropriately enough for us – “I will drink wine.” It’s here on youtube.
Sinatra, of course, is a legend and everyone agrees on that but I’ll tell you what sometimes gets lost in the madness of modern life – just how fucking unbelievable wine is!
Those days when the world is pitched against you, those days when the mirror tells you you’re getting older, your clothes are a few years out of date and all the younger people can run faster than you. Those are the days when wine takes you aside and gives you an evening pep talk. You’re better than them, your clothes are full of character and, at your best, when you walk into a bar you actually have the same sort of presence as ole blue eyes himself. Especially when you are fueled by fermented grapes. And the youth still waste their time drinking beer and alcopops.
So let’s drink and listen to Frank.
A quote: “Alcohol may be a man’s worst enemy but the Bible says love your enemy.” Frank Sinatra.
